Daily Meditation: 8 Easy Tips to Make Meditation a Habit

MeditationMindWellbeingTop List

Many little things in our life come naturally to us, without thinking about them in detail. These things may be brushing your teeth or combing your hair. These are simple habits that seem to happen automatically.

One of the best ways to build up new habits in your life is to meditate each day and teach yourself a new habit. Meditation is a simple way to bring mindfulness into your life. It is one of the easiest ways to deal with stress. It’s also just great for living in general.

Meditation practices started in eastern cultures thousands of years ago, but they are becoming more popular in the west now. Meditation is even used in therapy practices to help people with mental illnesses.

Meditating every day can become as routine as eating breakfast and going to work. So let’s look deeper into how to start meditating.

1. Set a Specific Time for It

One of the most simple and effective ways to establish a meditation habit is to pick a specific time every day for it. Take 5 or 10 minutes out of your day (or more) and just sit down to do it.

Setting a time helps because it becomes part of your routine, so you will know that at this time every day, you are meditating. There’s no time like now to make it a part of your daily routine.

2. Just Do It!

If you struggle with meditating at first, don’t worry about it. Everybody goes through a stage where they feel like meditation isn’t working for them or that perhaps this has been overhyped and not worth the time.

Don’t worry about this. Meditation is just a practice, and it takes time to learn how to do it successfully. Just keep at it every day, and the efforts will pay off.

Start your daily meditation by sitting or laying down in a comfortable position. Repeat whatever mantra you have chosen to focus on during the session. Take time to breathe deeply and slowly, letting go of all other thoughts throughout this process.

The more you do it, the easier it will become for you. No one is there to judge or compete with you over how well you meditate!

3. Practice Mindfulness During the Day

While you are establishing this daily meditation habit of your own, don’t forget you can practice mindfulness throughout the day.

It’s super easy to take a few minutes and breathe when you feel stressed, but don’t forget about mindfulness in your daily life too. Don’t be afraid to take a few minutes to meditate at work or school during a break.

4. Find a Place Where You Can Be Alone

Find some time to sit down and meditate with no distractions or interruptions. Use a quiet room, closet, or outdoor space. Adjust the room temperature to your liking to make it as comfortable as possible. Put a sign on the door if you live with others.

5. Practice Deep Breathing

Next, start breathing deeply and exhaling slowly. It will feel a little funny at first, but keep going with it. Start this slow breathing every day for about five minutes.

As you focus on your deep breathing, start to become aware of any tension in your body and then relax that area.

6. Find an Object to Focus On

It’s good to start this habit by focusing on something specific, like a mantra or affirmation that you repeat throughout your meditation session. It can be anything, and it doesn’t necessarily need to be related to religion either! Any words will do.

Is there a sentimental object that you can focus on? You can keep that object insight while you meditate so that it helps keep your attention.

7. Get Comfortable

It’s essential to find a meditation pose that is comfortable for you. You can either sit on the floor or on a chair, and it might be good to have a pillow prepared too. If you are serious, you can buy an expensive meditation cushion for this purpose, but it’s not necessary.

Wearing comfortable clothes will enhance your relaxation. Yoga pants and a t-shirt are perfectly fine, but if you want to wear robes, sweatpants, sandals, or go au natural —go for it.

8. Eliminate Distractions

You should turn off the phone during your daily meditation because you don’t want it going off and disrupting your focus. You can even put it on airplane mode, so you don’t get any notifications during your practice either.

Don’t meditate near the television or computer. You should also shut out all other noises by closing the windows and doors, and if you have a noisy fan or AC unit that you can turn off, do so.

Increased Energy Levels & Mood

Just as important, meditation can help to improve your overall well-being and happiness. Not only will you feel better physically, but it’ll put you from a negative headspace into a positive one too.

Improved Focus

Even though this is a simple practice, it can help you to improve your concentration and focus. It will also train your brain not to be distracted by all the noise around.

You’ll feel like you’re living in the moment more often. Meditating has helped people find inner peace and joy and live more in the present moment.

Better Sleep

When you meditate every day before bed, it will help prepare your body for a much-needed rest. Meditation will help clear your mind and relax your body for deep sleep.
