Meditation practices started in eastern cultures thousands of years ago, but they are becoming more popular in the west now. Meditation is even used in therapy practices to help people with mental illnesses.

1. Set a Specific Time for It

One of the most simple and effective ways to establish a meditation habit is to pick a specific time every day for it. Take 5 or 10 minutes out of your day (or more) and just sit down to do it.

 

Setting a time helps because it becomes part of your routine, so you will know that at this time every day, you are meditating. There’s no time like now to make it a part of your daily routine.

If you struggle with meditating at first, don’t worry about it. Everybody goes through a stage where they feel like meditation isn’t working for them or that perhaps this has been overhyped and not worth the time.

Find some time to sit down and meditate with no distractions or interruptions. Use a quiet room, closet, or outdoor space. Adjust the room temperature to your liking to make it as comfortable as possible. Put a sign on the door if you live with others.

5. Practice Deep Breathing

Next, start breathing deeply and exhaling slowly. It will feel a little funny at first, but keep going with it. Start this slow breathing every day for about five minutes.

As you focus on your deep breathing, start to become aware of any tension in your body and then relax that area.

7. Get Comfortable

It’s essential to find a meditation pose that is comfortable for you. You can either sit on the floor or on a chair, and it might be good to have a pillow prepared too. If you are serious, you can buy an expensive meditation cushion for this purpose, but it’s not necessary.

 

Wearing comfortable clothes will enhance your relaxation. Yoga pants and a t-shirt are perfectly fine, but if you want to wear robes, sweatpants, sandals, or go au natural —go for it.

8. Eliminate Distractions

You should turn off the phone during your daily meditation because you don’t want it going off and disrupting your focus. You can even put it on airplane mode, so you don’t get any notifications during your practice either.

 

Don’t meditate near the television or computer. You should also shut out all other noises by closing the windows and doors, and if you have a noisy fan or AC unit that you can turn off, do so.
